Cheese Tasting with J. Rieger and Co.

We are so excited to welcome J. Rieger & Co. for their first spirits and cheese pairing with us. This will be a one-of-a-kind tasting experience led by Beverage Director of the soon-to-open new distillery, Andrew Olsen (formerly of Bluestem, Rye and The Rieger).  J. Rieger & Co. was the largest mail-order whiskey house in the country prior to Prohibition. 90 years later, in 2009, Ryan Maybee, a local bartender who opened Manifesto, a bar in the basement of the Rieger Hotel, learned of the hotel’s connection to the old distillery and wanted to resurrect it. After meeting Andy Rieger – the only living descendant of Jacob Rieger, the original J. Rieger & Co. distillery owner, at the opening of The Rieger restaurant in 2010, they decided to team up and make the distillery happen. Fast forward to present day – after gaining national recognition and an army of fans, they opened a brand new 60,000 foot distillery, tasting room and events space last summer.

Guests of this class will learn all about pairing cheese with cocktails and spirits and as well as the full history of how J. Rieger & Co. came to be what it is today. Enjoy four of our award-winning cheeses paired with a cocktails featuring all of J. Rieger’s different spirits.

Alma Mader is a brewer owned and operated brewery specializing in hop-forward ales and lagers that bridge tradition and innovation. August Cheese and Wine Tasting with Christina Corvino

When it comes to beautifully pairing wine with just about anything, Christina Corvino is your gal! We are thrilled to welcome her for her first classes here at the farm this year. She is the Co-Owner/General Manager/Sommelier of Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room, which opened in March 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri. The restaurant earned the coveted AAA Four Diamond Award just two months after opening, and Food & Wine Magazine named it to their 2017 Most Exciting Restaurant Openings. Her partner and husband Chef Michael Corvino was a 2019 James Beard Nominee for Best Chef: Midwest.

Christina will be joining us for two different classes this season, each focusing on a different wine feature (see our calendar for more dates). Each class will include five wines perfectly paired with five of our award-winning sheep’s milk cheeses.

Cheese Tasting with Boulevard Brewing Company

Come to the farm and enjoy our celebration of local cheese and delicious craft beers from Kansas City’s first craft brewery. The inimitable Kyle Hopkins, Boulevard Brewing Company’s Brand Ambassador and one of our favorite beer experts, will take us on a taste tour of five of Boulevard’s beers which we’ve expertly paired with five of our own Green Dirt Farm cheeses (It was a tough job to figure out these pairings, but somebody had to do it!)

You’ll sample each pairing followed by a discussion of flavors and methods. Seated at our long harvest table or at one of our intimate side tables you’ll learn about how brewing techniques influence flavor profiles in beer. Your Green Dirt Farm host will chat about the cheeses, cheese making and life on the farm. Both hosts will share their passion for the art and science of their crafts while you enjoy the wonderful fruits of the fermentation. Kyle’s tales from the brewery are always awesomely informative and entertaining. This event would make a fantastic gift for the fermentation geek in your life!

Join us in welcoming Co-Founder and CEO Rafi Chaudry as he leads the class along with Green Dirt in a beer and cheese pairing adventure. Torn Label opened in 2014 with a vision of making challenging, adventurous beer, and set out to create brews that entice craft beer novices and aficionados alike. They’ve come to be a Kansas City staple that continues to foster the spirit of innovation that has set American craft beer apart in the past decade.

Cheese Tasting with Amigoni Urban Winery

We believe there is nothing better than local cheese and wine on a beautiful summer afternoon. Join us as we celebrate the season with five scrumptious tastings of Green Dirt Farm cheeses paired with Kansas City’s Amigoni Urban Winery. The winery was established in 2000 and has been owned by the Amigoni family for the past 10 years. The 10 acre farm currently has over 4 acres of vinifera grapes, which produces over 99 percent of the world’s wines today. They have developed unique techniques to protect vines from the ever changing seasons one expects from the Midwest. Amigoni wines represent the accomplishment of persistence and will bring you a wine that will change your opinion of Missouri wines. Learn all about Amigoni and their selected wines while they answer any questions and guide you through your tasting. See you at the farm!

Cheese Tasting Collaboration with Wood Hat Spirits

Calling all whiskey loving dads! Join us this Father’s Day as we welcome Gary Hinegardner, the mastermind behind Wood Hat Spirits, for his second class with us! We got to know Wood Hat Spirits through the PBS program, tasteMAKERS that premiered its first season this fall. Wood Hat was featured in the pilot episode – you can find us in episode 8! It was a no-brainer to team up with them for a class this summer.

Wood Hat Spirits was the first craft distillery in Montgomery County, MO and the only one in the country to use a wood-fired still. They are also certified by the American Distilling Institute as a TRUE craft distillery – fermenting, distilling and aging is all done on site. They take pride in using local grains and fruit in their spirits, making them one of a kind.

Delight in five of our cheeses paired with five of their award-winning whiskeys and cordials while taking in the sights of our covered barn on our farm in Weston.

Cheese Tasting with Ça Va Champagne Bar (Sun)

Sparkling wine aficionado and General Manager of Ça Va Champagne Bar in Westport, Sarah Hogan, shares pairings of our artisan, small batch cheeses with her favorite Champagnes and sparkling wines.

A Kansas City native, Sarah Hogan returned home in 2013 after a decade-long stint in Chicago, where she earned a degree in creative writing from Columbia College. She soon found herself immersed in the burgeoning wine and hospitality community, taking a position as the Bar Manager at Accurso’s Italian Restaurant. She joined the team at Ça Va in 2014, and worked closely with owners Caitlin Corcoran and Howard Hanna to grow the Champagne bar into a nationally-recognized establishment known as much for its innovative wine selections as for its warm hospitality. In 2019, she took over as General Manager at Ça Va and continues to further the mission of #champagneforthepeople. Sarah became a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2018. She works to further her education, and the education of those around her, as the Operations Director of Gang of Pour, an industry-focused wine and hospitality education group based in Kansas City.

What better way to celebrate a spring afternoon than to leisurely sip some fantastic bubbly wines from all over the world paired with our award-winning sheep’s milk cheeses? Expect to savor five scrumptious tastings of sparkling wines paired with five different Green Dirt Farm cheeses specially chosen to marry well together. Sarah and a host from Green Dirt Farm will discuss the flavors in the wines and how the carbonation impacts flavor tasting. Join us for this special celebration event! Join the Garden Gate team for a fun flower arranging class at Green Dirt Farm! Enjoy the fresh air in our beautiful barn tucked into the Weston bluffs while creating your own floral masterpiece. Each ticket includes a glass of red or white wine, Green Dirt Farm cheese to nibble on and a make-and-take fresh floral arrangement. Additional wine available for purchase.

Join us in welcoming Chef Vaughn Good back to the farm for this fifth annual celebration of artisan cheese and meat. Vaughn first gained attention for his marvelous meat centric restaurant in Lawrence, Hank Charcuterie. After closing Hank Charcuterie, it was time to make way for his new restaurant on Kansas City’s Westside, Fox and Pearl, showcasing his delicious smoked and cured meat creations to the Kansas City audience. At this event you’ll spend a lovely afternoon relaxing at the long harvest table in our beautiful barn. You’ll be treated to four tastings of different cured and cooked meats paired with four different Green Dirt Farm cheeses. Your Green Dirt Farm host and Chef Vaughn will discuss each pairing, how each meat or cheese was made, how to use them at home, and why each selection makes a delicious pairing. Two pairings will be paired with beer and two will be paired with wine so guests will get a little bit of everything! Cheers!!
